The Red Triangle Icon in Navigate

When you are registering for courses that require a prerequisite or corequisite course, you will often see a Red Triangle icon next to the course name. This indicates that you need to pay attention to the course you are trying to add because you have to either take a course before you take the one you are trying to register for (a prerequisite) or you have to take a course at the same time as the one you are trying to add (corequisite).

- - Prerequisite - A course you must take before you can take another course
    - - For example, PSYC 101 and PSYC 215 (or MATH 120) are prerequisites for PSYC 217. You must take both courses before you can register to take PSYC 217.
  - Corequisite - A course you must take at the same time as another course
    - - For example, MATH 226 or MATH 226H must be taken at the same time as PHYS 201; therefore, if you want to register for PHYS 201, then you need to also register for MATH 226.

Common Reasons for the Red Triangle Icon

1. If you took the non honors version of a course, then you do not need to take the honors version of a course to meet a listed prerequisite.

- - - For example, PSYC 109. This course requires PSYC 101 or PSYC H101 as a prerequisite. If you took PSYC 101, then you have met the required prerequisite. Navigate may post the red triangle icon next to the course to alert you of the prerequisite; however, since you took one of the courses (the "or" indicates only one is needed), then you should be able to register. Continue with registration, even if the system initially says "no." Check your Registration Statement to confirm the course was successfully added to your account.

2. Courses with a listed "recommended preparation" course will often be notated with a course that VVC faculty recommend you take prior to taking a specific course. This preparation course will provide foundational knowledge in a specific subject area to increase your effectiveness in the course you want to register to take. This course is not required - it is suggested.

- - - For example, PSYC 101 has a recommended preparation course of ENGL 101.0 or ENGL 101H. If you have not taken ENGL 101.0 or ENGL 101H already, then you can still register to take PSYC 101. Navigate will give you the red triangle icon next to the course to alert you of the recommended preparation that is suggested, however, it is not required. You can proceed with registering for the course, even if the system says the transaction was not successful. Check your Registration Statement to confirm the course was successfully added to your account.

3. External Coursework - Courses taken at another college or university, or was met with a external test/exam (ie. AP, IB, CLEP, Dantes, etc), will not be listed in Navigate under the "Plan Suggestions" section of the "My Planner" screen in Navigate (Student). If you have met with a Counselor and submitted a "Prerequisite Challenge/Validation" form, then a waiver has been placed in Colleague to meet specific course prerequisites and/or corequisites. Navigate will continue to give you the red triangle error because the VVC course is not being recognized; however, once you continue with registration and attempt to register, the registration request should be accommodated. Check your Registration Statement to confirm if the course was successfully added to your account.

- - - If you have not met with a Counselor to process the prerequisite or corequisite request, please submit a "Prerequisite Challenge/Validation" form to VVCounseling@vvc.edu.
